Going to have to pop Milan on my places to visit soon list. For some reason, I had it in my head as being too industrial - wonder if I'm getting it confused with somewhere else. But also I love some of the UK cities that were traditionally industrial (e.g. Manchester, Liverpool), so shouldn't shy away, even if it is/was.
I'd also love to know what your mother-in-law cooks for you when you're there!
no no, it IS very industrial! You've got that right. It's not very Italian in the way Florence or Rome are. It is very much a city where people move for work. But even so, there's plenty to do, see, and eat in Milan. I enjoy returning there frequently, and I also had a great time living there for two years.
My mother-in-law is from the Amalfi coast, which very much reflects in her cooking. She's adapted brilliantly to us being vegan so there're tons of bean stews, peas, tofu with different sauces, amazing pastas with mushrooms or other veg, and she makes the BEST grilled vegetables. I dream of her grilled aubergines. And artichokes! I love artichokes so much but am hopeless at cooking them.
I think I will definitely try to visit. In some ways, cities like that can be even more interesting than the 'classic' ones. I love lots of the buildings (especially old warehouses) in Bristol and Birmingham and Manchester, for example, and also love looking at the housing created for factory works.
Your mother-in-law's food sounds absolutely delicious. My next Italy visit will need to be somewhere with a kitchen, so I can enjoy cooking with all those beautiful vegetables.
I bet the choice is easy when you have access to authentic Italian food but so good to see that cities like Milan are becoming more vegan friendly. Loved this post!
There’s more progress happening all the time, and of this stuff is also absolutely delicious, so much work has gone into it. No old tired veggie burgers here!
I've only been to Milan once many years ago, but as you say I'm sure it's much more vegan friendly now! It's always so encouraging to go back to a place and find more options than the last time. And that pizza looks amazing!

that's what I love about going back - it's always improved, with new vegan options and more delicious stuff available. Progress!
Delicious! That pizza looks heavenly!
It was! Marghe never disappoints. Now, if only they did vegan cheese...
